John Paul Sorci, Wappingers Falls Resident, 89

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. – John Paul Sorci, a native of Wappingers Falls, and more recently a resident of Palatka, Fla., died Saturday, July 2. He was 89.

Born on July 30, 1926, to John and Josephine (Cuchelo) Sorci, he was looking forward to celebrating his 90th birthday with his family. 

He served in the U.S. Navy as a petty officer during World War II. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 4364 in Florida, and also the board of directors for the battleship USS Tennessee annual reunion.

He was a correctional officer for almost 30 years at Matteawan State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. He had a strong faith and was a fourth degree knight with the Knights of Columbus Assembly 0159. He loved to sing and dance, and had a great sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary (Mauro) Sorci; three children, Deborah Senopole Sorci (Al Kutka), Mary-Lou Pickles (William) and John A. Sorci (Cynthia); six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and one great granddaughter born just hours after his death; his brother, Anthony Sorci; and his daughter at heart, Mary Joy Cohen..

He was predeceased by his sister, Mary; and brothers, Salvatore, Paul and James.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 8, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Delehanty Funeral Home, 64 E. Main St., Wappingers Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, July 9, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 11 Clinton St., Wappingers Falls. Burial will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
